RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to determine if a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of dexmedetomidine decreases vasopressor requirements in septic dogs undergoing surgery. Vital parameters, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, vasopressor requirement, and 28-day mortality were recorded. Dogs were randomly divided into two groups: a dexmedetomidine (DEX) (1 mcg/kg/h) group and a control group (NaCl), which received an equivalent CRI of NaCl. Dogs were premedicated with fentanyl 5 mcg/kg IV, induced with propofol, and maintained with sevoflurane and a variable rate fentanyl infusion. DEX or NaCl infusions were started 10 min prior to induction. Fluid-responsive hypotensive patients received repeated Ringer's lactate boluses (2 mL/kg) until stable or they were no longer fluid-responsive. Patients that remained hypotensive following fluid boluses received norepinephrine at a starting dose of 0.05 mcg/kg/min, with increases of 0.05 mcg/kg/min. Rescue adrenaline boluses were administered (0.001 mg/kg) if normotension was not achieved within 30 min of starting norepinephrine. The NaCl group received a significantly higher dose of norepinephrine (0.8, 0.4-2 mcg/kg/min) than the DEX group (0.12, 0-0.86 mcg/kg/min). Mortality was statistically lower in the DEX group (1/10) vs. the NaCl group (5/6). Results of this study suggest that a 1 mcg/kg/h CRI of dexmedetomidine decreases the demand for intraoperative vasopressors and may improve survival in septic dogs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the transverse quadratus lumborum block (QLBLQL-T) on time to the first postoperative rescue analgesia in dogs submitted to laparoscopic ovariectomy. A total of twenty-three female dogs were included. Dogs were randomly assigned to receive a bilateral QLBLQL-T, performed either with 0.3 mL kg-1 ropivacaine 0.5% [group QLB0.5% (n = 8)] or with ropivacaine 0.33% [group QLB0.33% (n = 8)] or a fentanyl-based protocol [group No-QLB (n = 7)]. Dogs were premedicated intravenously (IV) with fentanyl 5 mcg kg-1, general anesthesia was induced IV with propofol and maintained with sevoflurane. Invasive mean arterial pressure (MAP) values were recorded five minutes before and five minutes after performing the QLBLQL-T. The short-form of the Glasgow composite measure pain scale was used every hour after extubation, and methadone 0.2 mg kg-1 was administered IV when pain score was ≥5/24. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, ANOVA test combined with Tukey post hoc test, Student's T-test and Chi-square test were used to analyze data; p < 0.05. Time from QLBLQL-T to the first rescue analgesia was significantly longer in QLB0.5% than in group QLB0.33% and No-QLB. MAP pre- and post-block decreased significantly only in group QLB0.33%.

The objective of our study was to compare the efficacy of sciatic and saphenous ultrasound nerve blocks with and without US-guided obturator nerve block in dogs undergoing tibial-plateau-levelling-osteotomy (TPLO) surgery. This study was developed in two phases: identification of an ultrasound window in the inguinal region for obturator nerve block and utilization of it in dogs undergoing TPLO. Dogs were assigned randomly to one of two groups: one received the three blocks with 0.5% ropivacaine (ON group) and the second one (NoON group) with NaCl instead of ropivacaine for the obturator block. In phase 1, the obturator nerve was visible between the pectineus and the abductor muscles and was approached using an in-plane technique. It was possible to use the ultrasound window for phase two. The number of dogs that received at least one bolus of intraoperative rescue analgesia in the NoON group (12/15 dogs) was significantly higher (p = 0.003) in comparison with the ON group (4/15). An ultrasound window to block the obturator nerve in the inguinal compartment with an in-plane technique was found. The use of this approach could produce adequate analgesia with less motor function impairment in dogs for TPLO surgery.

Cytokines contribute to the pathogenesis of lupus nephritis (LN), yet their value as prognostic biomarkers is still debated. We aimed to describe the serum cytokines' profiles and prospectively assess correlations with disease features and renal response in a multicentric cohort of consecutive adult patients with biopsy-proven active LN. Cytokine associations with clinical and serological data were performed at LN diagnosis (T0), and at 3 (T3) and 6 months (T6) of follow up. Renal response according to EULAR definition was assessed at T3, T6 and T12. BAFF and interleukin (IL)-37 were measured by ELISA; IL-2, IL-10, IL-17A and IL-18 by a bead-based multiplex cytokine assay (Luminex). Thirty-nine patients with active LN (age 40.5 ± 15.6 years; F 71.8%; 84.6% proliferative LN) were enrolled, of whom twenty-nine displayed complete longitudinal records. At T0, we observed higher levels of IL-37 and IL-17 in proliferative vs. non-proliferative LN (IL-37: 0.0510 (0.0110-0.2300) vs. 0.0000 (0.0000-0.0397) ng/mL, p = 0.0441; IL-17: 2.0920 (0.5125-17.9400) vs. 0.0000 (0.0000-0.6025) pg/mL, p = 0.0026, respectively), and positive correlations between IL-10 and 24 h proteinuria (r = 0.416, p = 0.0249) and anti-dsDNA levels (r = 0.639, p = 0.0003). BAFF was higher in patients with low complement (p < 0.0001). We observed a sustained correlation between BAFF and IL-10 throughout T6 (r = 0.654, p = 0.0210). Higher baseline IL-37 and BAFF levels were associated with renal response at T3 and T6, respectively, while baseline IL-18 levels were higher in patients achieving response at T12. Our study highlights the complexity of the cytokine network and its potential value as a marker of active LN and renal response.

BACKGROUND: The usefulness of myositis-specific autoantibodies (MSAs) and myositis-associated autoantibodies (MAAs) for the assessment of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) is acknowledged, but laboratory standardization remains a challenge. We detected MSAs/MAAs by multi-analytic line immunoassay (LIA) and particle-based multi-analyte technology (PMAT) in a multicenter cohort of patients with IIMs. METHODS: We tested the sera from 411 patients affected with definite IIM, including 142 polymyositis (PM), 147 dermatomyositis (DM), 19 cancer-associated myositis, and 103 overlap myositis syndrome (OM), and from 269 controls. MSAs/MAAs were determined by 16Ags LIA in all sera, and anti-HMGCR by ELISA in 157/411 IIM sera and 91/269 control sera. The analytical specificity of LIA/HMGCR ELISA was compared with that of PMAT in 89 MSA+ IIM sera. RESULTS: MSAs/MAAs were positive in 307/411 (75%) IIM patients and 65/269 (24%) controls by LIA (Odds Ratio 9.26, 95% CI 6.43-13.13, p < 0.0001). The sensitivity/specificity of individual MSAs/MAAs were: 20%/100% (Jo-1), 3%/99.3% (PL-7), 4%/98.8% (PL-12), 1%/100% (EJ), 0.7%/100% (OJ), 9%/98% (SRP), 5.6%/99.6% (TIF1γ), 4.6%/99.6% (MDA5), 8%/96% (Mi-2), 1.5%/98% (NXP2), 1.7%/100% (SAE1), 4%/92% (Ku), 8.5%/99% (PM/Scl-100), 8%/96% (PM/Scl-75), and 25.5%/79% (Ro52). Anti-HMGCR was found in 8/157 (5%) IIM patients and 0/176 (0%) controls by ELISA (p = 0.007). Concordance between LIA/HMGCR ELISA and PMAT was found in 78/89 (88%) samples. Individual MSAs detected by LIA were associated with IIM subsets: Jo-1 with PM and OM, PL-12 with OM, Mi-2, TIF1γ, and MDA5 with DM, SRP with PM, and PM/Scl-75/100 with OM (p < 0.001 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Since MSAs are mostly mutually exclusive, multi-specific antibody profiling seems effective for a targeted clinical-serologic approach to the diagnosis of IIMs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are a group of rare autoimmune disorders characterized by muscle weakness and inflammation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are the main class of small noncoding RNAs regulating a wide range of physiological and pathological processes and play a role in mediating autoimmunity and inflammation. In this review, we summarize the latest knowledge on the role of miRNAs in systemic autoimmune diseases with particular focus on IIMs. RECENT FINDINGS: Study on miRNA expression in IIMs is helping in understanding the pathogenetic basis of the disease at a tissue and systemic level. Several miRNAs, even with a muscle-specific expression (myomiRs), have been shown to be involved in immune and nonimmune mechanisms of myofiber damage. MiRNAs modulate and orchestrate the local inflammatory infiltrate and could be used as potential biomarkers as they correlate with disease activity and response to therapy. SUMMARY: IIMs comprise different clinical phenotypes and still little is known about the molecular signature of each subset. Further research about miRNA profiling will provide additional insights in the disease characterization with an expected impact on the therapeutic strategies.

Dexmedetomidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, which use had an exponential increase in human and veterinary medicine in the last 10 years. The aim of this mini review is to summarize the various uses of dexmedetomidine underlining its new applications and capabilities in the small animals' clinical activity. While this drug was born as sedative in veterinary medicine, some studies demonstrated to be effective as an analgesic both in single administration and in continuous infusion. Recent studies have also shown the role of dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant during locoregional anesthesia, increasing the duration of the sensitive block and consequently decreasing the demand for systemic analgesics. The various analgesic properties make dexmedetomidine an interesting drug for opioid-free analgesia. Some studies highlighted a potential neuroprotective, cardioprotective and vasculoprotective role of dexmedetomidine, thus conferring it a place in critical care medicine, such as trauma and septic patients. Dexmedetomidine has demonstrated to be a multitasking molecule and it is ready to face new challenges.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a 30% end-inspiratory pause (EIP) on alveolar tidal volume (VTalv), airway (VDaw) and physiological (VDphys) dead spaces in mechanically ventilated horses using volumetric capnography, and to evaluate the effect of EIP on carbon dioxide (CO2) elimination per breath (Vco2br-1), PaCO2, and the ratio of PaO2-to-fractional inspired oxygen (PaO2:FiO2). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective research study. ANIMALS: A group of eight healthy research horses undergoing laparotomy. METHODS: Anesthetized horses were mechanically ventilated as follows: 6 breaths minute-1, tidal volume (VT) 13 mL kg-1, inspiratory-to-expiratory time ratio 1:2, positive end-expiratory pressure 5 cmH2O and EIP 0%. Vco2br-1 and expired tidal volume (VTE) of 10 consecutive breaths were recorded 30 minutes after induction, after adding 30% EIP and upon EIP removal to construct volumetric capnograms. A stabilization period of 15 minutes was allowed between phases. Data were analyzed using a mixed-effect linear model. Significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The EIP decreased VDaw from 6.6 (6.1-6.7) to 5.5 (5.3-6.1) mL kg-1 (p < 0.001) and increased VTalv from 7.7 ± 0.7 to 8.6 ± 0.6 mL kg-1 (p = 0.002) without changing the VTE. The VDphys to VTE ratio decreased from 51.0% to 45.5% (p < 0.001) with EIP. The EIP also increased PaO2:FiO2 from 393.3 ± 160.7 to 450.5 ± 182.5 mmHg (52.5 ± 21.4 to 60.0 ± 24.3 kPa; p < 0.001) and Vco2br-1 from 0.49 (0.45-0.50) to 0.59 (0.45-0.61) mL kg-1 (p = 0.008) without reducing PaCO2. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The EIP improved oxygenation and reduced VDaw and VDphys, without reductions in PaCO2. Future studies should evaluate the impact of different EIP in healthy and pathological equine populations under anesthesia.

There is still a need for an efficient method for the isolation of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from human blood that provides a reliable yield with acceptable purity. Blood is a source of circulating EVs, but soluble proteins and lipoproteins hamper their concentration, isolation, and detection. This study aims to investigate the efficiency of EV isolation and characterization methods not defined as "gold standard". EVs were isolated from human platelet-free plasma (PFP) of patients and healthy donors through size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) combined with ultrafiltration (UF). Then, EVs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), imaging flow cytometry (IFC), and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). TEM images showed intact and roundish nanoparticles in pure samples. IFC analysis detected a prevalence of CD63+ EVs compared to CD9+, CD81+, and CD11c+ EVs. NTA confirmed the presence of small EVs with a concentration of ~1010 EVs/mL that were comparable when stratifying the subjects by baseline demographics; conversely, concentration differed according to the health status across healthy donors and patients affected with autoimmune diseases (130 subjects in total, with 65 healthy donors and 65 idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) patients). Altogether, our data show that a combined EV isolation method, i.e., SEC followed by UF, is a reliable approach to isolate intact EVs with a significant yield from complex fluids, which might characterize disease conditions early.

Mesenchymal stromal cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) are extensively studied as therapeutic tools. Evaluation of their biodistribution is fundamental to understanding MSC-EVs' impact on target organs. In our work, MSC-EVs were initially labeled with DiR, a fluorescent lipophilic dye, and administered to BALB/c mice (2.00 × 1010 EV/mice) through the following routes: intravenous (IV), intratracheal (IT) and intranasal (IN). DiR-labeled MSC-EVs were monitored immediately after injection, and after 3 and 24 hours (h). Whole-body analysis, 3 h after IV injection, showed an accumulation of MSC-EVs in the mice abdominal region, compared to IT and IN, where EVs mainly localized at the levels of the chest and brain region, respectively. After 24 h, EV-injected mice retained a stronger positivity in the same regions identified after 3 h from injection. The analyses of isolated organs confirmed the accumulation of EVs in the spleen and liver after IV administration. Twenty-four hours after the IT injection of MSC-EVs, a stronger positivity was detected selectively in the isolated lungs, while for IN, the signal was confined to the brain. In conclusion, these results show that local administration of EVs can increase their concentration in selective organs, limiting their systemic biodistribution and possibly the extra-organ effects. Biodistribution studies can help in the selection of the most appropriate way of administration of MSC-EVs for the treatment of different diseases.

For the echocardiographic examination horses should not be sedated unless absolutely necessary because this alters cardiac dimensions and indices of function. However, some horses do not tolerate the echocardiographic procedure and require sedation to conduct the examination safely and obtain good quality images. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the concurrent infusion of dobutamine in horses sedated with romifidine counteracts the cardiovascular changes observed with sedation alone. Twelve healthy untrained Standardbred mares were used. Three echocardiographic examinations were performed on the same day for each subject: a) without any treatment under resting conditions (WT); b) under sedation with romifidine administered intravenously (RT); c) under sedation with romifidine and concurrent intravenous infusion with dobutamine (RDT). A three-hour washout period was observed between each examination and the order of the examinations was randomly decided by rolling a dice. The measurements on the images recorded were performed offline at the end of the study protocol and at this point the operator was blinded to the horse and treatment administered. Left ventricular internal diameter (LVID) in diastole, left ventricular free wall (LVFW) in systole, and fractional shortening (FS) were higher in the WT group compared with the other two groups. No differences in the other M-mode and B-mode values were observed. A continuous rate infusion of dobutamine did not counteract the alterations caused by sedation and led to similar echocardiographic measurements to those obtained after romifidine administration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the recent developments about anti-MDA5 antibody positive dermatomyositis with a focus on its pathogenesis, clinical features and treatment options of rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease, its most ominous complication. RECENT FINDINGS: Anti-MDA5+ dermatomyositis has a heterogeneous clinical spectrum with different patient subsets exhibiting widely different outcomes; severe acute interstitial lung disease is the main factor impacting prognosis. The pathogenetic role of anti-MDA5 antibodies is an active area of investigation. SUMMARY: Anti-MDA5+ dermatomyositis has a wider spectrum of manifestations than previously thought. A high index of suspicion is needed not to miss atypical presentations. In the setting of acute interstitial lung involvement, once a confident diagnosis is made, an aggressive approach with early combined immunosuppression affords the best chances of survival.

Cannabis is a plant with an astonishing ability to biosynthesize cannabinoids, and more than 100 molecules belonging to this class have been isolated. Among them in recent years cannabidiol (CBD) has received the interest of pharmacology as the major nonpsychotropic cannabinoid with many potential clinical applications. Although the reactivity of CBD has been widely investigated, only little attention has been given to the possible photodegradation of this cannabinoid, and the data available in the literature are outdated and, in some cases, conflicting. The aim of the present work is providing a characterization of the photochemical behavior of CBD in organic solvents, through a detailed GC-MS analyses, isolation, and NMR characterization of the photoproducts obtained.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate prevalence of anti-Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) antibodies in sera of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) patients. METHODS: Anti-PTX3 and PTX3 levels were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in sera from unselected patients with AAV and compared with patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, n = 130), other connective tissue diseases (CTDs, n = 97) and matched healthy controls (n = 97). Optical density (OD) cut-off for positive anti-PTX3 antibodies was determined by ROC curve analysis and set as 0.234. Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on fixed human granulocytes was used to analyze the fluorescence pattern of anti-PTX3 antibodies. Liquid-phase inhibition tests were conducted to assess potential interferences. RESULTS: We included 101 AAV patients (females 58%, median age 60[51-69] years) affected either with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA, n = 51), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA, n = 12) or eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA, n = 38). Anti-PTX3 antibodies were detected in 29.7% AAV patients, being significantly higher than in healthy controls (p < 0.001) and CTDs (p = 0.030) but lower than in SLE (p = 0.004). Anti-PTX3 antibody prevalence was 44.7% in EGPA, 25% in MPA and 19% in GPA (p = 0.034). Among ANCA negative patients, 35.7% displayed positive anti-PTX3 antibodies. Anti-PTX3 were associated with a lower prevalence of systemic (p = 0.002), ear-nose-throat (p = 0.006) and renal manifestations (p = 0.016). Anti-PTX3 antibodies were characterized by a specific IIF pattern on fixed granulocytes. PTX3 serum levels resulted lower in AAV than healthy controls (p < 0.001). PTX3 inhibited anti-PTX3 binding in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: Anti-PTX3 autoantibodies appear a promising novel biomarker of AAV, especially EGPA.

Dogs differ greatly in size, heart (HR) and breathing rates (BR). In addition, they have a clear Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA) at rest. Therefore, better than any other mammalian species, dogs offer an opportunity to test whether resting RSA varies with body weight, HR or BR. Sequences of inter-beat-intervals (IBI, ms) a few-minutes long were collected in twenty-three resting dogs of different sizes, together with pneumograms. IBI variability was quantified by standard time-domain criteria. From beat-to-beat instantaneous heart rate (hR, beats/min), RSA was the difference between inspiratory peak (hR-peak) and expiratory trough (hR-trough), in percent of mean HR. RSA averaged 40.1 % ±4.5, or more than three times that of humans, with large inter-animal variability. On average, RSA contributed 38 % of the total IBI variability. RSA did not differ between sexes and did not correlate with body weight. It had modest negative correlations with HR (P < 0.05) and BR (P < 0.05), and a very strong negative correlation with hR-trough (P < 0.001). In two separate dogs, during panting, RSA was absent. In the transition from resting to panting, RSA continued like at rest for several breaths, despite the tachypnea, underlying the importance of central mechanisms in the origin of RSA. In conclusion, RSA in dogs is very large and explains less than half of their sinus arrhythmia. Rather than HR, BR or hR-peak, changes in the vago-sympathetic control, represented by hR-trough, are the most likely source of variability of RSA among subjects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This is a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on predominant immune cell phenotypes involved in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM). RECENT FINDINGS: Major circulating immune cell subpopulations described in IIM encompass the lymphocyte compartment. An unbalance in T cell subsets seems to consistently affect the peripheral and muscle compartment, with a predominance of CD4+ T and B cells in dermatomyositis, CD8+ T cells in polymyositis/inclusion body myositis (IBM) and novel findings highlighting novel proinflammatory T subsets, that is, CD8+Tbet+ and CD28- T cells across different IIM subsets. On the other hand, an impairment in Treg cells number and function has been described especially across polymyositis/dermatomyositis and IBM. Total T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, increased in immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, skewed toward Tfh2 and Tfh17 in dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and juvenile dermatomyositis. B cell compartment is more rarely described in IIM, yet an unbalance in this pool is as well likely. Evidence of plasma cells increased in polymyositis, dermatomyositis, IBM, and Bregs decreased in dermatomyositis have been reported. Perturbations in the memory and naïve subsets are common in dermatomyositis/polymyositis and antisynthetase syndrome. SUMMARY: Protean immune cell abnormalities characterize different IIM subsets, reflecting the complexity of these autoimmune conditions. A deeper understanding of B-cell and T-cell immunophenotyping may promote early diagnosis and identification of new potential therapeutic targets.

Italy was severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. In early March 2020, a series of legislative decrees have been issued, establishing the restrictions that all Italian citizens are required to respect, according to which it is strictly forbidden to leave the house if not for reasons of necessity, health, or work. This qualitative study investigated which aspects clients find helpful or hindering in shifting to group tele-psychodrama due to the COVID-19 pandemic, after participation in an in-person psychodrama group. Participants were 15 adults who were members of a pre-existing in-person psychodrama group that shifted to a tele-psychodrama group format facilitated by two psychodrama therapists. The Client Change Interview was used at the end of the tele-psychodrama as a post-treatment assessment. All the interviews were transcribed and then underwent a thematic analysis. The analysis yielded six shared themes: the role of tele-psychodrama sessions during COVID-19 pandemic; perceived effectiveness of tele-psychodrama; main advantages of tele-psychodrama; limitations encountered during the online intervention; the termination of tele-psychodrama; and the relationship with the therapist. The findings provide preliminary evidence for the clinical practice of tele-psychodrama and lays the groundwork for further studies that can contribute to the use of electronic platforms in psychodrama interventions.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic severely strained the already unprepared Italian healthcare system. This had repercussions on healthcare workers, stemming, in particular, from a lack of clear guidelines, adequate protective equipment, and professional preparedness. Such conditions were especially prevalent in Northern Italy. Objectives: This study aimed to examine COVID-19-related professional and psychoemotional stress among nurses and doctors in two hospitals in Northern Italy, along with the worst critical incidents affecting healthcare personnel. A parallel objective was to elicit healthcare professionals' opinions about what changes are needed in the healthcare system's operations, as well as about the relational/emotional skills that are needed to better manage relationships with patients in emergency situations. Participants: Snowball sampling was used to recruit participants and yielded 17 hospital professionals: six nurses (five female and one male) and 11 doctors (seven male and four female). Three of these professionals worked in intensive care and the others in different wards. All had close contact with COVID-19 patients. Methods: The study employed a qualitative research design, using in-depth interviews of ~60 min each that were conducted via Skype video calls. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, then analysed. The qualitative analysis employed mixed methods to identify the most relevant and recursive themes from the interviews. Results: Four fundamental themes emerged from our analysis of the interview texts: (1) disorganisation and psychoemotional stress; (2) urgency and critical incidents; (3) everything surreal; and (4) disruptions in empathetic relationships with patients. Conclusions: Through our analysis of the interview narratives, we found that systematic and in-depth psychological training is needed to prepare professionals for (1) altered relationships with patients in emergencies; (2) use of exceptional medical equipment; (3) elaboration of new bioethical models suitable for disasters and pandemics; and (4) engagement with the themes of death and dying.

This article considers the relationship between dehumanization, ontological representation of death, trust in physicians, and burden of care on the part of caregivers of terminally ill patients. One hundred informal caregivers (relatives and friends) of patients hospitalized in four hospice facilities in northern Italy were involved. Of these, 77% were primary caregivers (those who mostly helped the patient). All of the participants were given a questionnaire comprising the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) to determine caregivers' burden in their roles, the questionario post mortem (QPM) (post mortem questionnaire) for the effectiveness of and their trust in the medical nursing team of palliative care services, the Testoni death representation scale (TDRS) to detect their ontological representations of death and the humanity attribution test (HAT) to investigate their attributions of humanity to terminally ill patients. Per the literature, the present results demonstrated higher burden levels for female caregivers and primary caregivers. In informal caregiving, the dehumanization of patients does not have any advantage in reducing the burden of care. Further studies are required to compare formal and informal caregivers concerning the effect of dehumanization.
